Beginning April 15, 2021, every Californian age 12 and older will become eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. Keep in mind that currently only the Pfizer vaccine has EUA for 12 and up. (Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are currently EUA for 18 and up)
CDC & FDA Has Approved Johnson & Johnson Vaccine
On April 23, 2021, ACIP reaffirmed its interim recommendation for use of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine in all persons aged ≥18 years under the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). CDC and FDA had recommended a pause in the use of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine on April 13, 2021 after reports of U.S. cases of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) among Janssen COVID-19 recipients. TTS is a rare syndrome that involves acute venous or arterial thrombosis and new onset thrombocytopenia in patients with no recent known exposure to heparin. The FDA’s EUA now includes a warning that rare clotting events might occur after vaccination, primarily among women aged 18–49 years.
Provider and patient education about this warning is critical to ensure that women aged <50 years are aware of the increased risk for TTS after receipt of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine and the availability of other FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccines (i.e., mRNA vaccines).
The Benefits & Risks of the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine
Understand the risks and benefits of receiving the single-dose Johnson & Johnson covid-19 vaccine, which may prevent you from getting covid-19. It is your choice to receive this vaccine.
Steps to follow to register and complete your vaccination:
Step 1
If registering for a Monday-Friday appointment, skip to step 2. If registering for a weekend appointment, Click Here. You will be redirected to a HIPAA compliant form to register for a time and to upload your health insurance card. (Vaccines are free regardless of insurance.) You will then complete steps 2 through 8 at the pharmacy when you arrive.
Step 2
If you are signing up Monday-Friday, you will be signing up through a secure website (Health Mart COVID-19) to schedule your appointment. Through Health Mart, you will need to create an account. Each person receiving a vaccine will need their own account. This site is where you will receive your vaccination record and also obtain the EUA information sheet for your vaccine.
Step 3
Complete the COVID-19 Assessment.
Step 4
If you are eligible for a vaccine, type your zip code and select Family Pharmacy Center (location), date, and time for your appointment.
Step 5
Download and print your vaccine voucher and take it with you to the vaccine site. Your voucher is confirmation of your appointment.
Vaccine voucher is only valid for the date printed on the voucher.
Step 6
Please arrive at the pharmacy on time for your appointment and not earlier than 5 minutes prior to your appointment. Bring your vaccine voucher, photo ID, and phone. If you arrive earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment, we ask that you wait in your car, as there is only a limited number of people allowed in the pharmacy at a given period of time.
Step 7
When you arrive at the pharmacy, you will be asked to sign in. A pharmacy member will verify your information. Please have your ID ready as vaccines may not be administered without proper identification to ensure age eligibility is appropriate for vaccine administration (18 and up for Moderna & Janssen/J&J).
Step 8
Administration of the vaccine will take place in a designated area in the pharmacy. A trained pharmacist will administer the vaccine.
Step 9
Once vaccinated, you will be asked to wait 15 minutes or 30 minutes depending on medical history. If needed (for the Moderna vaccine) your second appointment will be scheduled immediately after vaccination.
Check your email. Documentation of your vaccination will be sent to the email that was utilized for Health Mart registration.
